The Doha International Family Institute (DIFI), a member of Qatar Foundation, participated in two events on the sidelines of the 57th Session of the Commission for Social Development in New York.
The first event, organised by the International Federation for Family Development (IFFD), saw DIFI co-organise a panel discussion titled the ‘Value of Unpaid Care and Domestic Work’. It was held in partnership with the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations; the Division for Inclusive Social Development, UN DESA; and the International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE).
The session, introduced by HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al Thani, Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations, and Mario Armella, World President of IFFD, featured panellists who spoke about the topic from three different approaches – the role of civil society, the role of parents and the role of employers.
DIFI Executive Director Dr Sharifa al Emadi said, “IFFD and DIFI have worked together on multiple projects, including expert group meetings, Doha Briefings, side events and, recently, the civil society meeting held in preparation for the Doha International Conference on ‘Parenting, Child Well-Being and Development’.”
As part of DIFI’s participation in the panel, Dr Emadi presented the IFFD Family Award to the IFHE.
The annual award is given to a person or entity for promoting family perspective policies and family values on a global scale. DIFI previously received this award in 2018.
“I would like to thank IFFD for inviting me to present the Family Award to the International Federation for Home Economics. We have collaborated with the IFHE previously – the IFHE represented one of the civil society organisations that co-drafted and partnered with DIFI for the ‘Civil Society Statement on Parenting’. I look forward to future collaborative efforts between all our organisations,” said Dr Emadi.
Following the IFFD panel, DIFI participated in a session organized by Qatar’s Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairstitled‘Strategy of the Social Protection Sector in the State of Qatar: Promotion and Protection of the Family.’
During the panel, Dr Emadi took part in a presentation titled ‘Public-Private Partnerships in Family Policy: The Model of the State of Qatar,’ which addressed DIFI’s work in supporting family policies at national, regional and international levels, and included relevant examples of the organisation’s programmes.
Dr Emadi pointed out that the Qatari experience is a model for effective partnership between the public and civil sectors to develop public policies in various fields, emphasising that DIFI will continue to enhance cooperation and partnership between itself and the government sector.
DIFI is a global policy and advocacy institute working to advance knowledge on Arab families through research and promote evidence-based polices at a national, regional, and international level. The institute has special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
