The head of a UN team overseeing a ceasefire in Yemen’s western city of Hodeida, Michael Lollesgaard, arrived in the capital Sana’a on Monday for talks with Houthi officials.
The former Danish general is expected to be joined later Monday by the United Nations special envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, a rebel source in Sana’a said.
The UN officials are scheduled to hold meetings with senior rebel officials to discuss the redeployment agreement in Hodeida. After the meetings, Griffiths is expected to head to the Saudi capital Riyadh to meet with Yemeni President Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi, the source added.
The truce agreement for Hodeida included a province-wide ceasefire and the withdrawal of Houthi fighters. It went into effect on December 18, following UN-sponsored peace talks in Sweden between the Iran-allied Houthi rebels and the Saudi-backed government.
However, there has been a hold-up in the withdrawal of fighters and both sides blame each other for breaching the ceasefire.
