Heavy rains and snowfall paralysed northern Pakistan with landslides, blocking highways and leaving hundreds stranded in the mountains, officials said on Tuesday.
Army and civil administration teams rescued tourists stranded in heavy snow, military spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor said in a statement.
He said that the army and air force launched separate rescue teams, each carrying medicine and food.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) put rescue and relief agencies on alert amid fears of landslides in northern areas.
Thousands of people visit the country’s north every year to enjoy snowy weather, but lack of infrastructure sometime results in accidents.   “At least three members of a family were killed in suburbs of Abbottabad due to a landslide,” said Taimur Ali, a spokesperson for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa disaster management authority.  
The main highway between Pakistan and China remained blocked at multiple points due to due to landslides caused by heavy rains and snow.
