New York: US President Donald Trump’s long-awaited Middle East peace plan is likely to be postponed until after Israel’s elections in April, Israel’s ambassador to the UN said on Tuesday. Danny Danon said in November he expected the US to show the proposals to Israel at the beginning of 2019, but he now believes Washington will wait until after the Israeli elections in April to avoid interfering, he told reporters in New York.
“It’s a smart decision because we don’t want it to become the issue of the election whether you support the plan or are against the plan, so we will be patient and we are still very respectful for the work of the team in DC and we will be open-minded to the plan,” Danon said.
Despite the US having good relations with “moderate” countries in the region, Danon said he was still “sceptical” that those countries could bring Palestine to the table. Trump said he wanted to conclude an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement by the end of his first term in office and tasked his son-in-law, Senior White House Adviser Jared Kushner, with preparing the plan.
