Doha has become a platform for dialogue and mediation, hosting experts in all fields of diplomacy, culture, art, heritage and media, Minister of State HE Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al Kuwari said, adding that the experience of Qatar in the field of cultural diplomacy has been rich and well known since the 1990s.
In his lecture before the Italian Parliament on Tuesday, attended by Qatar’s Ambassador to Italy HE Abdulaziz bin Ahmed al Malki al Jehni, Dr Kuwari said, “The rich Qatari experience in the field of cultural diplomacy has earned it a great deal of trust and friends from all over the world, who have come to experience Qatar, its people, leadership and civilisation. Its status, position and attitude when coping with the unjust blockade imposed on it were thus all the more reinforced.
“Qatar has promoted a human-centered development policy. The state spent huge sums of money to create a state-of-the art educational infrastructure. One of the particularly salient signs of this is the Education City of Qatar Foundation with its international universities in medicine, engineering, architecture and humanities. This is in addition to Qatar University which has obtained a high ranking among the educational institutions worldwide, and is now top-ranked in the Arab world.
“Moreover, Qatar Foundation (QF) has also embarked on educational initiatives all over the world, deeply believing in the principle of sharing the common good with mankind. This is highlighted in a number of well-known programmes, including the ‘Educate A Child’ initiative, which has so far benefited more than 10 million children in the poorest countries of the world, and ‘Education Above All’, which provides education in conflict zones and marginalised suburbs.
“Another QF initiative is the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), which is held every year in Doha to examine the best practices and means for the development of education and which some observers have described as the ‘Nobel Prize in Education’.
“All these educational initiatives are part of Qatar’s cultural diplomacy. Since 2012, Qatar has launched the ‘Cultural Years’ initiative, which annually celebrates the culture of a given country through intensifying cultural exchanges and exchange of intellectual achievements. We introduce our culture, arts and heritage to other peoples and in turn, learn about their culture, arts and heritage.
“The initiative has been a great success and culture years were dedicated to Japan, the UK, Brazil, Turkey, China, Germany and Russia. We will be extremely happy that Italy, with its rich and delightful culture, be our guest throughout one year, which will, no doubt, be a remarkable and eventful one.”
Dr Kuwari noted that in the field of sports diplomacy, Qatar has deservedly become a world-class sport platform visited by top-level athletes and attracting world-class events.
Dr Kuwari added that cultural diplomacy is essentially a soft force in which states invest to establish dialogue and partnership with one another.
