The monthly Industrial Production Index registered 106.2 points in November, down 1.7 percent from October 2018, but rose 2.2 percent when compared with the corresponding month in 2017.
This indicator, which is issued by the Planning and Statistics Authority, reflects details of the growth of the various industrial sectors such as the mining sector with a relative importance of 83.6 percent, manufacturing industries with a relative importance of 15.2 percent, electricity production and water production and desalination with a relative importance of 0.7 percent and 0.5 percent respectively.
The index shows a decrease of 1.5 percent in the mining sector last November, compared to October, due to the decrease in the quantities produced in crude oil and natural gas by 1.5 percent, while the other and quarrying showed an increase by 0.2 percent. The manufacturing sector recorded a decrease by 1.7 percent in November 2018 compared to October because of the decline in production in five groups: manufacture of beverage 11.9 percent, followed by manufacture of refined petroleum products 3.5 percent, Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products by 3.0 percent, manufacture of cement and other non-metallic minerals by 0.9 percent, manufacture of food products by 0.8 percent, while production in three groups: manufacture of basic metals (8.3 percent), manufacture of rubber and plastics (3.9 percent), manufacture of printing and reproduction of recorded media by 1.0 percent.
In terms of annual change, the index in the same sector rose by 0.4 percent from the corresponding month (November 2017) due to higher production in the following groups: manufacture of beverage by 5.0 percent, manufacture of chemicals and chemical products by 2.3 percent, manufacture of rubber and plastics by 2.1 percent, while the annual decline in manufacture of printing and reproduction of recorded media was 14.8 percent, followed by the cement industry and other non-metallic mineral products by 12.9 percent, the manufacture of refined petroleum products by 2.1 percent, the manufacture of food products and the manufacture of basic metals increased by 0.1 percent each.
Electricity production recorded a decrease between November 2018 and the previous month by 18.9 percent, while the annual decline was 1.3 percent (compared to November 2017). When compared to November 2018, an increase was noticed in water sector production by 0.5 percent and a decrease of 8.2 percent compared to November of the previous year (2017).
