THE first lunar eclipse of 2019 will occur on January 21 during the dawn, Qatar Calendar House (QCH) announced on Tuesday. The timing of the total lunar eclipse will coincide with the full moon period of Hijric month ‘Jumada Aloula 1440 H’.
According to QCH astronomer Dr Beshir Marzouk, the total lunar eclipse on January 21 will be a rare sight as the next such eclipse will take place on May 26, 2021. Moreover, the moon will look brighter and larger than a normal full moon as it will be at its nearest point to the earth (3,57,715 km from the earth’s centre).
However, residents of the Middle East region (including Qatar) will be able to watch only the penumbral phase of the lunar eclipse, he added.
The penumbral phase of the eclipse will start over Qatar sky at 5:37am while the partial phase will start at 6:35am. The total phase will start at 7:43am. The maximum totality of the eclipse will occur at 8:13am Doha time. The total eclipse phase will end at 8:44am followed by partial phase at 9:51am and the penumbral phase at 10:48am. (TNN)
