The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) of Qatar has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights of the Philippines to protect the rights of workers from the Philippines.
NHRC Chairman Dr Ali bin Smaikh al Marri and José Luis Martin Gascon of the Philippines signed the pact.
The NHRC chairman said the agreement aims to strengthen the close relations between the two parties for promotion and protection of human rights, especially the rights of workers from the Philippines and their families.
He said the idea of signing this agreement came in recognition of the distinctive role played by the Filipino community in Qatar and its participation in the development process.
“We hope, through this agreement, to cooperate on reducing the reasons for a worker or employee to complain, to go to the root of the problems and find solutions, whether the problems start from the Philippines side or Qatari side,” he said.
Marri stressed that Filipinos have demonstrated throughout the world that they are intelligent, flexible and serious at work.
“This reflects the distinguished culture of the Filipino people,” he said, adding that the working conditions in Qatar is always better and the people of Philippines can take advantage of it.
