Walk into the Omani Souq, you won’t be surprised to see a long line of citizens to buy the treasured desert truffles.
With the popular culinary delicacy reaching the Central Market, especially the Omani Souq, citizens have made a beeline for the prized vegetable despite a box of truffles costing a whopping QR1,400.
The average price of a kilo of local truffles is between QR400 and QR500, while the average price of imported truffles ranges between QR100 and QR250.
Vendors at the Omani Souq said the arrival of local truffles, known for its nutritional and medicinal values, in the market will increase by the middle of the month. Doha Municipality has allocated temporary outlets at the Omani Souq to sell truffles to citizens.
Hamdan al Enezi, a trader, said Qatar’s environment is suitable for truffles, which sprout after the rain. He said a good rainfall in the past months have led to good growth of truffles.
The price of local truffles is higher, especially as finding it requires a long time and effort.
Mohamed Azad, a trader, said large quantity of truffles is now reaching the market from Algeria, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia.
But citizens prefer Qatari truffles.
He said citizens prefer Zubaidi truffle, which is the finest species, and its price varies according to the size.
Farouk Mia, another trader, said the prices of truffles are not fixed daily.
Farouk, who has been working in this field for more than 30 years, said truffle is considered a precious delicacy during the winter in the Gulf because it is used for making soups, preparing dishes and decorating them.
