Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) and Wega, a leading global payment solution developed by Truxtun Capital, have signed a landmark agreement to jointly organise the first multigame e-sports tournament in the Middle East, the “Qatar eSport Aspire Wega World Cup”.
The three-week event is scheduled to take place at the Aspire Ladies Hall in Doha from November 19 to December 31, 2019.
The alliance between the two major sports and technology organisations will offer the nearly 2.3 billion e-sports players around the world a unique opportunity to compete in four online and offline qualifying rounds. Starting 2019, these rounds will culminate in 2022 in parallel with the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar.
Commenting on signing the partnership agreement with AZF, Patrick Moynier, President of Wega, said: “We are proud to launch this outstanding e-sports tournament in partnership with Aspire Zone. As a Fintech company offering an innovative digital financial platform, it was a strategic decision to invest into a market that is due to grow to 6 billion players over the next 10 years. Our technology and services will enhance the entire player experience and increase the industry’s revenues.”
Mohammed Mubarak al Kuwari, Chief Marketing Officer at AZF, said: “We always look to host innovative events for Qatar’s vibrant population, and we believe this tournament will become another platform for demonstrating country’s ability to organise international events. We are thrilled to engage with more than 2.3 billion players from all continents in what is expected to be the largest e-sports tournament in the world.”
In October 2018, AZF launched the first-of-a-kind Sports Business District to attract large sports-related multinationals, promote the setup of sustainable businesses and start-ups, and facilitate the commercialisation of sports-related products and services. Wega, based in Switzerland, is now looking into the possibility of expanding its operations in the Middle East, potentially with a permanent office in the Aspire Sports Business District.
These new initiatives support Qatar’s National Vision 2030 and Aspire’s longstanding mission of diversifying the country’s economy and positioning Qatar as a regional sporting hub.
