WASHINGTON:US President Donald Trump met with Republican senators on Friday after threatening a “very long” government shutdown just hours ahead of a midnight deadline, demanding $5 billion for border wall funding and seeking to shift blame for a holiday showdown to Democrats.
There appeared to be little chance the Senate would go along with a bill passed by the House of Representatives on Thursday that would give Trump $5 billion toward building the wall on the Mexican border - one of the major themes of his presidency. Republican Senator Richard Shelby said he doubted the issue would be resolved on Friday while John Cornyn, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, said there may be room for compromise but that Trump was unlikely to go for any bill that does not include wall funding.
