Italian armed forces’ 85-member musical band, part of the 102- member branch of the legendary Carabinieri band, gave its third and final public performance on Tuesday evening as part of the Qatar National Day (QND) celebrations at Darb Al Saai, the main venue for cultural activities to celebrate the national day.
On its maiden visit to Qatar, the band performed at Katara the Cultural Village Foundation, participated in the national day parade at the Doha Corniche along with local and other visiting military bands. The repertoire represented the best of Italian classical music and opera traditions such as “Nessun Dorma” (Giacomo Puccini) and “Aida” (Giuseppe Verdi). A symphony orchestra-like performance characterises the Carabinieri Band, say experts.
Talking with Qatar Tribune, Italian Ambassador to Qatar HE Pasquale Salzano said, “It is an honour the State of Qatar chose and invited the Carabinieri band to take part in the celebrations of this very special day for the Qatari people. The band is one of the Armed forces’ many prestigious features; it’s innovative and anchored to its values and traditions.”
He said that the Father Amir His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa alThani has always liked and praised the band’s performance during his visits to Italy. “The Carabinieri Band is known all around the world for its assorted repertoire, the impeccable performances and the charm that its musicians are able to unleash with their impressive uniforms, magnificent composure and profound music vocation”, the ambassador added.
Pasquale Salzano thanked Gen. Giovanni Nistri, Commander General of Carabinieri ‘for bringing to Doha these extraordinary and talented musicians and for showcasing in Qatar the excellence of the Italian military band.
The Carabinieri Band has gone through several stages of transformation since its inception and induction into the Royal Carabinieri Corps as a Corps of Trumpeters in 1820. The ensemble later transformed into “Fanfara” (1862), “Musica” (1894), and “Banda della Legione Allievi Carabinieri” (1910-20). After further changes, it got its present structure composed of 102 musicians, 85 of them performed in Qatar on the occasion of Qatar National Day. These musicians are graduates from best Italian music academies and selected through open competitions. Their performances include a wide repertoire—from traditional military marches to classical symphonies, to contemporary compositions.
Concerts are also prepared here with the meticulous commitment and under the careful guidance of Maestro Director Lt. Col. Massimo Martinelli.
The envoy went on to point out that the band has performed and given concerts in all major European countries as well as the United States, China and Japan, receiving accolades from the hoi polloi and critics alike.
Lauding the band’s spectacular performances, Salzano said that they reflected its dedication, commitment and compassion that constantly inspire the members of the Carabinieri Force in carrying out their many task to protect and assist people at home and abroad.
