Qatar Museums (QM) has selected Qatari artists Fatima Mohammed and Sarah al Oabidli for the first residency programme at ‘Studio 209 NY’, a new partnership for an international art residency which will commence in 2019.
Fatima, who will join the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) from January 1 to March 30, 2019, is a contemporary Qatari artist who works in mixed media, printmaking and installation art. She also creates her own homemade inks from medicine that is meant to cure her back ailment.
In 2016, Fatima graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar with a bachelor’s degree in Painting and Printmaking and a minor in Art History. Fatima has had two group shows at the Katara Art Center and one group show at Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar.
Sara, who will join ‘Studio 209 NY’ from April 1 to June 30, 2019, is a portrait and documentary photographer. Her self-initiated projects explore the varying political, philosophical and social issues of today. Most recently, her work has been exhibited as part to the Contemporary Art Qatar shows in Germany and Russia.
Khalifa al Obaidly, director at the Fire Station, stated: “’Studio 209 NY’ is the latest addition to Qatar Museums’ comprehensive portfolio of programmes that look to nurture a new generation of creators and help Qatar originate sources for art and creativity from within.”
The ISCP is a laboratory for the world’s most promising artists and curators. It supports the creative advancement of its participants and promotes cultural exchange through residencies, exhibitions and public programmes.
Housed in East Williamsburg, with 35 work studios and two gallery spaces, the ISCP is New York’s most comprehensive international visual arts residency programme, and the fourth largest worldwide. With over 1,350 alumni from more than 80 countries, it hosts more than 100 residents each year.
The Qatari artists will have access to a diverse global network of colleagues along with other programme benefits, including a private, furnished studio space, monthly access to cultural institutions in and outside New York, monthly private studio visits with professionals from other museums, galleries and alternative spaces, the opportunity to meet with one of the two visiting critics to ISCP each month, as well as the opportunity to realise public projects in several offsite venues in New York.
QM has also announced the next application deadline for artists wishing to join the residency in New York for the summer and fall slots commencing July 1 – September 30, 2019 and October 1 – December 31, 2019. The open call will run from January 1, 2019 to March 1, 2019.
