The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) will open important gateways in Al Wakra Road projects on the Qatar National Day on Tuesday, the authority announced on Sunday.
The roads to be opened include a 3.5-km stretch on Al Wakra Road carriage, 126-m new underpass, 3-km link road between Southern Doha Expressway and E-Ring and 90 percent of Al Watiyyat Interchange on F-Ring Road.
Highway Project Department Assistant Manager Engineer Bader Darwih said the opening of the 3.5-km of main carriageway will deliver three lanes in each direction and a 126-metre underpass with two lanes in each direction, extending from Barwa Village east Airport Interchange on G Ring Road to the existing Pearl Roundabout.
“The upgraded road will provide free-flow traffic movement between Mesaieed and Al Wakra City and the Doha (via Airport Interchange), seamless travel along the main carriageway and easy access to local destinations,” Darwish said.
On the opening of Qatar Metro’s Red Lane or Coastal lane, Road Assets Department Manager at the Ministry of Transport and Communication Hamad Eissa said, “More than 90 percent of the projects has been completed and the final works are in progress. An announcement of the opening will be made soon.”
The 9-km Al Wakra Main Road upgraded with 160-m underpass will not only offer free flow of traffic between the emerging Al Wakra City and Doha but also promote healthy lifestyle with its 6.1-km of pedestrian and cycle paths. Upon completion of the Al Wakra Road project in 2020, Ashghal anticipates that the road will connect Al Wakra to Doha via Airport Interchange (G Ring Road).
With the opening of the new roads, the travel time from Al Matar Street up until Pearl Roundabout in Al Wakra will be reduced by approximately 50 percent due to increased lane capacity to accommodate up to 600 vehicles per hour.
The replacement of existing roundabouts with signal-controlled interchanges will also help boost road safety and improve efficiency of traffic movement. The project’s design allows for a wide central median that will accommodate Qatar Rail’s Metro Red Line, which will connect Al Wakra to Doha with its two main stations at Ras Bu Funtas and Al Wakra.
The opening of the five eastbound lanes on the main carriageway will provide road users with three kilometres of free-flow stretch linking Doha Expressway, Industrial Area Road, Rawdat Al Khail Street, E Ring Road and Al Watiyyat Interchange.
From the Interchange, motorists will access the F Ring Road to reach Hamad International Airport and Bu Hamour Area. Parts of Al Watiyyat Interchange and 1.25-km ramp bridge will provide easy traffic from north of Al Watiyyat Interchange towards the Hamad International Airport through eastbound carriageway of the F Ring Road.
The project will also deliver a 700-m free right-turn providing connectivity to Bu Hamour Area through the westbound carriageway of the F Ring Road.
The partial opening of the road was attended by Al Wakra Municipality Director Mansour Bu al Ainayn and Central Municipality Council member Mansour al Khater, General Directorate of Traffic Lieutenant-in-second Youssef al Bader along with officials from Ashghal and project engineers.90 percent of Metro’s Red Lane project has been completed, says Public Works Authority
