The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) on Friday welcomed the European Parliament’s decision to condemn the violations and discriminatory practices of the blockading countries against Qatari citizens. The European Parliament has also called on the Egyptian authorities to free detained Qatari citizens Ola al Qaradawi and her husband.
The NHRC also welcomed Interpol’s decision to remove Qatari citizen Dr Youssef al-Qaradawi’s name from its red notice (wanted list) after it found that the allegations made against him were political in nature and violate international human rights.
The European Parliament approved a draft decision criticising the continued violations of human rights as a result of the continued blockade of Qatar, and the discriminatory measures by adopted by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and the UAE against Qatar since June 2017, calling for an end to them.
The European Parliament also demanded that the Egyptian government release Ola al Qaradawi and her husband, who were arrested without charges.
The NHRC has reiterated its full support to the European Parliament’s decision, and renewed its rejection of the blockading countries’ discriminatory practices that have affected Qatari citizens, three of whom suffered forced disappearance in Saudi Arabia.
The NHRC has called on the European Parliament to issue a similar decision against Saudi Arabia that calls for the country to release the three Qatari citizens who were forcibly disappeared there, to end all arbitrary measures against Qataris, and to hold to account those responsible for the measure.
The committee also confirmed it was in constant contact with the United Nations working group on enforced disappearances, and will follow up with various legal bodies to hold Saudi Arabia accountable for its illegal actions.NHRC welcomes European Parliament’s decision
