AS part of its celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10 each year, the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) organised a lecture for Qatar Steel’s employees on the origins and principles of human rights and the role of NHRC in promoting a culture of human rights.
Director of NHRC’s International Cooperation Department Sheikha Najwa al Thani spoke about the historical context of the emergence of human rights, saying it came as a result of interaction between different cultures and civilisations, and is a continuous struggle for all humanity against injustice and exploitation, wherever it may be.
Sheikha Najwa mentioned the accreditation of NHRC by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions with ‘A Status’ in 2010 for five years and renewed in 2015 for the same period.
She also described the continuous cooperation between the NHRC and all human rights international organisations, the most important of which are Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. She also stressed on its efforts to raise awareness of human rights and freedoms to consolidate their principles in thought and practice through training courses, media campaigns and publications.
Director of the Department of Administrative Affairs of Qatar Steel Mohammed bin Saleh al Mahdi stressed the company’s belief in human rights issues and its keenness to ensure that all its employees are fully aware of their rights and duties.
