Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has lauded Qatar for its role in fighting corruption and supporting development issues around the world with reference to the Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award.
The award is an initiative of HH the Amir to support the efforts of the UN to fight corruption and encourage those who contribute to combating it.
The Malaysian prime minister was speaking at a session with winners of the award. The event was organised by Malaysia’s National Center for Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption (GIACC) in cooperation with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center (ROLACC).
The session was attended by UN Special Advocate against Corruption HE Dr Ali bin Fetais al Marri.
The prime minister thanked Qatar and the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani for the international efforts to fight corruption by establishing ROLACC and the Anti-Corruption Excellence Award.
He also expressed pride that Malaysia hosted the awards ceremony.
Dr Mohamad reiterated his commitment to supporting the efforts globally and locally, calling on other countries to join the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC)
He urged Malaysian youth to work on winning the award. The prime minister also presented the efforts Malaysia’s efforts to combat corruption such as establishing the GIACC, formulating national policies for briberies and setting up private institutions to fight corruptions.
He highlighted the importance of the rule of law saying that governments would never prosper without integrity and transparency.
He added that the award is a great incentive for governments, individual initiatives, academic institutions, press and civil institutions to fight corruption.
Dr Mohamad praised the ROLACC which is the main organiser of the award as well as GIACC.
After the session, the prime minister along with Dr Marri and Deputy Prime Minister and head of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail launched the national initiative to fight corruption and the guidelines on correct procedures that help financial institutions prevent corrupt practices in the private and public sectors.
