A cosmetology workshop and gift-giving programme for dozens of distressed overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) temporarily under the care of Philippine Overseas Labor Office-Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (POLO-OWWA), was held in Doha recently.
The event was organised by the Bantay at Kasanggang OFW International Qatar Chapter.
According to B@K Programme and Events Chairperson Marivic Vergara, the event was part of the regular quarterly visit of their organisation to the agency in line with their outreach initiatives.
The programme was led by the B@K Core Team comprising B@K President Darwin Tabucol, Outreach Program Chairperson Jhon Castro, Head of Logistics Team Ed Hipolito and Vergara. OWWA Welfare Officer Amy Empaynado assisted the group in the initiative.
B@K's second outreach programme featured a mini-lecture on basic cosmetology, particularly on nail care. It was facilitated by Genaflor Biglang-Awa and her team from PN Medical Spa. Hands-on training was also provided to the distressed OFWs including gifts containing hygiene kits and food.
"Some private individuals have also shared and extended their financial support to B@K to make the event possible. Other members have donated used or unwanted clothes for the distressed OFWs and chocolates and toys for the three children staying with their respective mothers at POLO-OWWA while waiting for their proper repatriation. Furthermore, the 20 OFWs who participated in a Q&A portion and on-hands workshop have received nail care kit as prizes," Vergara said.
She added that 27 OFWs have also been given an opportunity to talk to their families and loved-ones back home for a maximum of five-minute phone call each.
B@K's event was supported by its affiliate groups Kabida, Kanayon, FFQ, TSDQ, Frontrow Qatar, Zumbatitos, M.E.A.N.S. Qatar, and UPIRM.
