Doha College (DC) is riding a high environmental wave, having recently renewed its Secondary School Green Flag, obtained its first Primary School Green Flag and won at the Qatar Sustainability Awards 2018.
A few days ago, DC took a further step towards a cleaner environment, together with Dulsco Qatar and representatives of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) and beIN Sports, by officially inaugurating a recycling centre outside its Al Waab campus.
The centre, refurbished by Dulsco and decorated with environment-themed art produced by DC students, will segregate recyclable waste into paper, aluminium, plastic and cardboard.
The Secondary School has an Eco-School Committee and the Primary School has an 'Eco-Warrior' selected from each year group who champion environmentally friendly attitudes and support drives such as recycling and composting, as well as monitor the use of electricity and single-use and disposable products. The students will also manage the recycling process at the newly opened centre.
Colin Gilpin, CEO of Dulsco Qatar, said:"As one of the leading environmental solutions providers in Qatar, we are committed to inspiring change and ensuring sustainability throughout our community. The recycling centre has been established with the goal of educating and motivating our community to take responsibility for their actions, be it through the students' artwork on the walls or the collection and segregation of recyclables at the centre."
The ribbon-cutting was carried out by Dulsco CEO Colin Gilpin, Ghanim Ali from beIN Sports, DC Principal Dr Steffen Sommer, Eng Mohamed al Ibrahim from the MME, Dulsco Regional Head of Commercial Nicola Maxwell and Business and Development Director at Doha College Ian Thornhill.
Dr Sommer praised the work that the staff and the students have put in to make the school ever greener."Only very recently, our school's environmental efforts were recognised at the Qatar Sustainability Awards. We are committed to continuing our journey on an environmental education, so that the young generation is aware of their impact on the world so they can make it a positive one. Staff and students strive to foster an ethos of reduce, reuse and recycle within our community, and the new recycling centre will certainly go a long way towards achieving this goal," he said.
