AS smart showers lashed Doha and other areas of Qatar for a short while on Sunday morning, the Qatar Meteorology Department (QMD) has forecast the spell to continue sporadically for the next 36 hours.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune, Director of Meteorology Department (Forecast & Analysis) Abdulla Mohamed al Mannai said that clouds formed due to low pressure in the western parts of the country and moved to the east on Sunday resulting in 15 to 20 minutes of heavy rains in Doha and its outskirts.
"The movement of clouds from west to east was quick. Weather will be partly cloudy and moderate rain associated with thunderstorm is expected during the next 36 hours," Mannai said.
Mannai also urged the public to follow social media accounts of QMD and keep away from sea-activities for the next 36 hours. The entire Gulf region is currently under the influence of low atmospheric pressure.
Meanwhile, though the rains were heavy, preparations in advance by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, the Ministry of Interior and Public Works Authority 'Ashghal' helped the teams formed to drain flooded streets and to ensure smooth traffic flow carry out their exercises successfully.
The Civil Defence teams immediately rushed to drain the water-logged streets and facilitate traffic flow without interruptions.
An officer assigned to manage rain water at Al Wakra said,"We have employed enough workforce and machinery to drain water from flooded streets, especially key roads, in order to avoid traffic interruptions".
