A hypertension awareness campaign"Is Your Blood Pressure High? Let us Keep It Under Control with the Help of your Healthcare Team" at Landmark Mall, saw the participation of around 60 students and faculty members from Qatar University's (QU) College of Pharmacy (CPH), College of Medicine (CMED) and College of Health Sciences (CHS); Weill Cornell Medicine - Qatar (WCM-Q); University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) and College of the North Atlantic-Qatar (CNA-Q).
The campaign is organised by QU Health in collaboration with the IPE Student Association. The IPE Student Association is a society that works to develop and facilitate interaction between students of University of Calgary in Qatar, Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, College of the North Atlantic - Qatar, and Qatar University with the goal of enhancing collaboration between health care students, creating a better educational environment and improving patient centred care.
The campaign aims to raise community awareness on issues related to hypertension as well as preventative measures through the IPE team. Healthcare students were on hand to greet a large number of visitors at various stations, each dealing with a different topic. The first station focused on screening and assessment, where CMED and WCM-Q medical, UCQ nursing and CNA-Q paramedicine students measured blood pressure. The second station focused on treatment with CPH students providing the public with information on the medication used in blood pressure patients and counselling. The final station focused on education, CHS nutrition and CHS public health students provided information to the public related to healthy lifestyles and blood pressure prevention.
Dr Egon Toft,vice president for Medical and Health Sciences and Dean of the College of Medicine at QU said of the event,"Interprofessional education is a pedagogical approach of particular importance to QU. This event was a complete success in increasing synergy and spreading awareness among the community. All healthcare students and faculty members worked together by using the quality of education learnt at the university to give patients lifestyle changes."
QU Health Chair of the Interprofessional Education Committee (IPEC) and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, College of Pharmacy (CPH) Dr Alla El-Awaisi added:"This outreach campaign was a great opportunity for healthcare students to work collaboratively and educate the public about blood pressure and the preventative measures that can be taken towards a healthier lifestyle."
The President of IPE Student Association and CPH MSc student Sawsan al Mukdad said,"The event was a huge success with more than 400 patrons visiting the booth and seeking advice from numerous healthcare students."
