Twenty-six different universities and colleges from different parts of Canada gathered at the 'Edu-Canada' fair at the College of the North Atlantic - Qatar on Sunday to promote their education programmes among local students in Qatar.
The fair, held under the auspices of the Canadian Embassy in Qatar, attracted hundreds of students and parents who got an opportunity to meet representatives of a number of prominent universities and educational institutions in Canada.
Addressing visitors at the fair, Ambassador of Canada to Qatar HE Stefanie McCollum highlighted the strong bond between Qatar and Canada and the high quality of education in Canada.
"In 2017, more 490,000 foreign students had been registered in Canadian universities and colleges, which is a remarkable number that points to the trusted and safe educational environment we have for students," McCollum said.
According to Ambassador McCollum, the number of universities and colleges participating this year is three times more than last year, which indicates the strength of Canadian involvement with Qatar.
"We hope that the students will be as interested in us as we are interested in them and we would like to see the number of students here willing to study in Canada grow," McCollum said.
A number of dignitaries and representatives from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education visited the fair, including Dr Ibrahim al Nuaimi, Undersecretary of Ministry of Education and Higher Education, who emphasised the importance of such events which the ministry motivates students to attend.
"We are keen to diversify the education opportunities for the students and Canada is well known for the quality of education and some of their institutions ranked among the best 100 universities in the world," Nuaimi told Qatar Tribune.
Khadija Jetha, representing the University of Alberta at the fair, said they know there is a lot of potential in Qatar and they are already have many students from Qatar at their university.
