Qatar has underlined the importance of education to development and its belief in the need to invest in the development, protection and education of children with a special attention to improving the quality of education by giving everyone the opportunity to gain a distinguished education and experience.
This came in a statement issued by the State of Qatar, which was delivered by Maha Yousef al Baker, member of Qatar's delegation participating in the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, before the Second Committee on item (20) on sustainable development.
Baker said Qatar has been able to make many achievements in this field in cooperation with its partners in the international community, adding that Education Above All has provided quality education to 10 million disadvantaged children in more than 50 countries around the world, including those affected by armed conflicts, poverty and natural disasters.
"As part of Qatar's efforts to meet its commitments to implement the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan, this year's voluntary national review was also presented during the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, which gave a picture of the progress made by Qatar in implementing the sustainable development goals discussed, including ensuring universal access to reliable, sustainable and affordable energy services, ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns, and revitalising the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development," she said.
Baker added that Qatar Nation Vision 2030 has identified key economic, social, human and environmental goals and has placed development at the centre of its priorities.
As part of its efforts to build an efficient and effective system to monitor and follow up the implementation of the goals of the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan, Qatar has aligned the objectives of this plan with the objectives of the Second National Development Strategy 2018-2022 of the State and has developed a monitoring and follow-up system, she said.
"Qatar continued to make progress in implementing the goals of sustainable development and efforts to develop its human, economic and environmental capacities, it had intensified its efforts and measures to overcome the economic, social and humanitarian burdens resulting from the unjust blockade in contravention of the provisions of international law and contrary to the fundamental principles of the multilateral international system," she added.
She said that the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan is of exceptional importance and represents a comprehensive and far-reaching vision that focuses on people and leads to transformation and looks forward to sustainable development in its three dimensions, economic, social and environmental, taking into account the different capacities and levels of development of countries and national policies and priorities.
She said Qatar has played a leading role in establishing the Global Alliance to report on progress in promoting societies that enjoy peace for all.
Baker emphasised the important role of education in sustainable development, which plays a pivotal role in building a better and more sustainable future for present and future generations.
