A 10-part series of robotics training sessions for Qatar's teaching community began at College of the North Atlantic-Qatar (CNA-Q).
The free sessions, offered in both English and Arabic, will continue throughout the fall semester and into the early winter.
The training takes place in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, which has been instrumental in ensuring that teachers take part in robotics training, to encourage students' interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) in the nation's classrooms.
The ministry also provides instructional expertise from Gassan Sabsaby, head of IT Educational Guidance at the ministry, and Salah Heikal, who is responsible for offering the robotics training in Arabic.
Teachers are offered up to 30 hours of instruction in robotics programming at CNA-Q.
The teachers then bring their training back into the classroom to teach students how to build and programme robots.
Annually, students in Qatar compete against each other at the National Robot Olympiad to showcase their newly-learned STEM skills. As Qatar's premier technical institution, CNA-Q is dedicated to continuing the provision of robotics training and hosting of the highly-anticipated National Robot Olympiad in April 2019.
"Robotics competitions are part of a worldwide movement to encourage hands-on skills training and immersion in technology for youth," said Samah Gamar, vice-president of Academic at CNA-Q."We really believe in the importance of an early introduction to programming and robotics as a pathway to greater awareness of the many opportunities provided by a career in STEM."
CNA-Q has been a provider of robotics training to the education community for several years, in addition to being the national organiser and host to the World Robot Olympiad in Qatar in 2015.
Since its inception in 2002, CNA-Q has grown to offer 30 diploma and certificate programmes, graduating thousands of students from full-time programmes who have populated the workforce in Qatar or pursued further education. This year marks the 17th year that CNA-Q has been providing high-quality experiential technical education in Qatar to support the State's strategic vision to educate, develop and retain young Qataris.
