Qatar University (QU) on Tuesday unveiled the first nanometer satellite project and a ground station within the research efforts of the Faculty of Engineering with a focus on integrating the students of the multidisciplinary college in the project.
The project's organisers from the Faculty of Engineering said the work on the huge project will take nearly two years, stressing that there is effective cooperation with local ministries, institutions and bodies.
The organisers said the project will serve the communication and scientific research sectors, especially in the field of environment, as well as national capacity building in space science and research related to the sector.
"Space exploration and technology has always been the engine of many scientific and technological discoveries that drive progress in a variety of areas. Thanks to nanometer satellites, access to space technology has become a reality for many research and academic institutions around the world," said Dr Abdulmajeed Hamouda, dean of the Faculty of Applied Engineering.
He said the main objective of the project is to establish a spacecraft design lab within Qatar University's efforts in scientific research in coordination with local and international organisations and partners to organise joint work through exchange of expertise and management of joint research teams.
He the construction and design of the satellite is a pioneering project for Qatar University, both in terms of its nature and in the way of achievement, which will involve students and faculty members to ensure its success.
Dr Abbas Amira, assistant dean for Research and Graduate Studies at the Faculty of Engineering, said:"A team from the Faculty of Engineering at Qatar University has expanded its research groups in the field of satellite. We see it today and this achievement comes as a result of the combined efforts of researchers in the college's different departments."
Dr Nasser al Emadi, head of Electrical Engineering, said that such a large project requires expertise, laboratories and facilities which are already available at the Faculty of Engineering at Qatar University.
"This project will make the College of Engineering at Qatar University a pioneer in the field of technology and education related to space science," said Dr Sumaya al Maaedid, head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
