THE Department of Family Affairs at the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs organised a workshop in collaboration with the Department of Legal Affairs at the ministry to raise awareness of directors of nurseries and licence holders about the laws regulating the operation nurseries.
The workshop focused on the importance of meeting the criteria of operating nurseries, including the availability of an educational environment within an adequate space, a health and safety system, appropriate educational curricula, a complete leadership and administration team, and highly qualified staff.
The presentation also emphasised the need for having a list displaying the nursery's financial system, administrative structure and staff qualifications and specialties in addition to a publicly accessible document specifying the admission and registration criteria and the required fees as well as payment deadlines.
The list must also include the types of care offered by the nursery in different areas such as health, nutrition, education and entertainment and should be approved by the ministry.
Touching on the structure of the nurseries' administration, the presenter noted that each nursery must have a pre-specified hierarchy that includes a director, a general supervisor, an assistant supervisor, a nutritionist, a nurse and doctor or visiting doctor and a suitable number of security guards and cleaning staff.
The representative of the Department of Legal Affairs added that all the staff having a direct interaction with children in the nursery must be females.
He noted that the nursery employees should meet a number of requirements which include not having any contagious diseases, not having been suspended for disciplinary reasons from their previous occupations, having a good reputation and a clear criminal record, having adequate professional and academic qualification and experience, and being licensed by the specialised authorities in the country.
