South African lawmaker Zwelivelile Mandla Mandela, grandson of late South African President Nelson Mandela, has urged fellow countrymen in Qatar to fly the South African flag high during the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
He urged them to support Qatar in hosting the mega event and stay steadfast to his grandfather's beliefs and legacy of peace and humanity.
Mandla Mandela was the guest of honour at the Ubuntu Bash, Heritage Day Bazaar at the Doha Golf Club on Friday.
Speaking at the event, he said,"As you live in Qatar looking forward to the World Cup in 2022, you will indeed fly the South African flag high because Madiba would only have expected that. As South Africans, we have to be leaders in humanity, peace and justice. These are the beliefs and the ideals that my grandfather represented and stood for."
He reminded the gathering that Madiba may no longer be with them but it is the role of the people and the younger generation to pick up from where Madiba left and continue charging forward to make South Africa proud.
"Unite our nations, join hands to make his ideals be a reality. Let us build a better world and ensure a brighter future for the coming next generation," he said.
South African Ambassador to Qatar HE Faizel Moosa said that Heritage Day is an occasion that brings all South Africans together."South Africa is showing the world how to unite even with 11 different languages, different cultures and ethnicities. They were able to come together and make one South Africa."
He said even though they have different challenges they learnt from Mandela to talk to each other ” simple dialogue."The world and Middle East can learn that through speaking to your enemies. And I think as South Africans, we represent that to the world."
Supreme Committee for Legacy and Delivery Community Engagement Manager, Mead al Emadi, urged people to register as volunteers for the World Cup.
