THE State of Qatar on Tuesday reiterated its rejection of all steps aimed at obstructing and weakening the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) in the Near East, reaffirming its commitment to stand by the Palestinian people and to provide for their basic needs.
Qatar also stressed its support for the Syrian people and to stop the crimes of the Syrian regime.
This came in a speech delivered by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs HE Sultan bin Saad al Muraikhi at the 150th ordinary session of the Arab League Ministerial Council.
Muraikhi said that the session comes at a time when the region is facing serious challenges that require everyone to redouble their efforts to find solutions to achieve the aspirations of the Arab peoples in security, stability and sustainable development. He added that the continuation of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories is the biggest challenge facing the Arab world.
"The State of Qatar supports all efforts and serious initiatives for peace and stresses that all efforts must be in accordance with the resolutions of international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative, in accordance with the two-state solution agreed upon by the international community," he asserted.
He reiterated Qatar's rejection of all measures aimed at depriving the city of Jerusalem of its legal, historical and religious status, noting that Israel's national law is dedicated to racism and constitutes a flagrant violation of international law. He also reiterated Qatar's full support to Palestinians in their effort to obtain their legitimate rights.
Furthermore, Muraikhi called upon the United Nations Security Council and the international community to intervene in Syria in order to protect civilians, stop crimes of the Syrian regime and its use of prohibited weapons and bring perpetrators of these crimes to international justice. He stressed that Qatar has not and will spare no effort in carrying out its humanitarian duties and to provide all aspects of support and assistance to the brotherly Syrian people.
On the Libyan issue, he reiterated the support of Qatar for the National Reconciliation Government and its efforts in rebuilding state institutions.
On the Yemeni issue, he expressed Qatar's emphasis on the importance of preserving the unity and independence of Yemen and its territorial integrity.
Meanwhile, Muraikhi met the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees Pierre Krahenbuhl on the sidelines of the meeting.
