WITH all Muslims around the world preparing for Eid Al Adha and many are buying Udhia (sacrifice animal), Islamic scholars have advised Muslim faithful to preserve this Islamic tradition and Sunnah of sacrificing animal on the Eid day.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune, Sheikh Mohammed Hassan al Muraikhy, Imam and preacher at the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, said this tradition, which is an important practice in Islam, has been witnessing negligence by many people.
He said some Muslim scholars have stressed that the act is not just a Sunnah, but an obligatory deed for whoever is capable to do it.
"It is a very significant practice that we get closer to Allah The Almighty with and it is more preferable individuals do it by themselves although it is possible to be bought abroad by charity institution," Muraikhy said.
He highlighted that charity institutions are providing this service and have their Udhia projects in the countries with more needy people.
Muraikhy, however, urged the people who do buy Udhia coupons in order to save time and effort to slaughter themselves or at least witness the slaughter.
"People must always donate to the needy people, but with the Udhia, Islam recommends that a person must eat one-third, donate one-third and gift one-third of his Udhia. Charity is always a good thing to do but Udhia is important to be carried out properly according to Sunnah," he added.
Udhia can be of sheep, camel, goat or cows whereas a camel or cow can be shared by seven people as an Udhia while sheep or goat is for one man and his family.
Muraiky added that a misconception people have is when they slaughter an Udhia for their relatives who had passed away.
"This is not compulsory unless it was the will of the dead relative for who is capable of implementing it," Muraikhy added.
Asked about the conditions a man must follow before offering the Udhia, Muraikhy said that anyone who is willing to give the offering and do Udhia should not cut his hair or nails from the first day of Dhul Al-Hijjah until the day of slaughtering.
