SCORES of Indian community members joined the celebrations of India's 72nd Independence Day organised by the Indian Embassy in Qatar at the Indian Cultural Centre on Wednesday morning.
The Ashoka Hall of Indian Cultural Center was packed to its capacity on the occasion with patriotic spirit holding sway over the audience.
The celebrations kicked off with the hoisting of the tricolour by Ambassador HE P Kumaran amid the singing of India's national anthem.
Then, the ambassador who presided over the event, read out the speech of the Indian President Ram Nath Kovind. The Indian ambassador thanked the Indian community members for attending the event in large numbers.
He also recalled the great Indian leaders who dedicated their lives to the country and urged members of the community to contribute to the development of India in diverse sectors.
A ceremonial cake was also cut jointly by the Indian ambassador and Indian students.
This was followed by presentation of patriotic songs by the students of Birla Public School and members of Indian expatriate organisation - Bangiya Parishad. The singers flaunted outfits displaying the colours of the Indian flag.
The community members belonging to different parts of India with diverse cultures celebrated their unity with great enthusiasm on this special occasion.
The event was attended by President of Indian Cultural Centre Milan Arun, Vice-President AP Manikantan, Group Chief Executive Officer of Doha Bank R Seetharaman, former ICC President K Girish Kumar, officials of Indian Embassy, representatives of different socio-cultural organisations and Indian schools and prominent Indian community leaders.
Besides Indian Embassy, different Indian schools and socio-cultural organisations also organised events to celebrate India's Independence Day.
