New Qatar Sports Club signing and four-time former African Player of the Year Samuel Eto'o said Qatar has the chance to stage a bigger World Cup or match the high standards of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Former Cameroon captain Eto'o joined the 13th club of his long career when he signed for QSC on a free transfer, days after leaving Turkish club Konyaspor by mutual consent.
Eto'o becomes the latest big-name arrival to join the Qatar Stars League after ex-Spain international Xavi Hernandez and former Netherlands playmaker Wesley Sneijder. He played with Xavi at Barcelona and Sneijder at Inter Milan, winning the Champions League with both teams.
Eto'o is Cameroon's all-time leading goal-scorer with 56 goals in 118 matches and twice African Cup of Nations winner.
Speaking during his official unveiling to the media at the club, the former Chelsea striker said:"It is a big opportunity for Qatar to showcase to the world that it can deliver an amazing tournament.
"When Russia won the bid, a lot of people said it cannot host it. I had played in Russia before and in my opinion, it is the best World Cup ever. So Qatar must show it can host a bigger World Cup or match the standard of the 2018 edition."
The former world's most highest paid player revealed that former teammates Xavi and Wesley influenced his decision to join the QNB Stars League club.
"Before i came to Qatar I spoke with Xavi and Sneijder. They told me that their experience in Qatar is good and I should make the move.
"I am happy that I took the decision to come to Qatar."
In 2009, Eto'o won the Champions League with Barcelona playing alongside Xavi.
A year later he won the same trophy with Inter in the same team as Sneijder.
The signing is a coup for Qatar Sports Club, who finished in mid-table last season and currently have little hope of winning any domestic titles.
Earlier on Monday Eto'o said Ligue 1 clubs had contacted him after he announced he was leaving Turkey last week.
He enjoyed five hugely successful seasons with Barcelona from 2004 to 2009, before helping Jose Mourinho's Inter team to win the treble of Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia titles in his first season in Italy. He then had brief stints at Chelsea and Everton in the Premier League.
