THE Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) cracked down on as many as 89 violations during its inspection campaign in July, 2018, to ensure compliance of suppliers (retail outlets) with Law Number 8 of 2008 on consumer protection.
The violations included multiple failures on part of retailers, such as failing to display prices, issuing invoices in Arabic, providing spare parts and replacement vehicle, clearly specifying the service's characteristics and prices and offering warranty for a period that corresponds with the service. It also included delays in after sale service, failing to refund the client or reoffer the service, falsely describing or advertising the service in a misleading way, offering discounts without obtaining the necessary licence, and failing to comply with the mandatory bulletin of vegetables and fruits prices.
The penalties included administrative closures and fines ranging between QR5,000 and QR30,000 in line with the laws and decisions governing the work of the Consumer Protection Department. (TNN)
