A COMMUNITY badminton tournament was organised by the Indonesian Embassy, in collaboration with the Organisation of Indonesian Community in Qatar (Permiqa), recently.
The tournament themed 'Our Work, Achievement of the Nation' was held to commemorate the 73rd Indonesian Independence Day, celebrated annually on August 17.
The participating members of the Indonesian community in the tournament came from Doha, Dukhan, Al Khor, Mesaieed and Wakrah areas of Qatar. The event organised at the initiative of Indonesia's Ambassador to Qatar HE Air Marshal (Retd) Muhammad Basri Sidehabi with support from head of Permiqa, Prihandoko, gave an opportunity to Indonesian expatriates in Qatar to celebrate their country's Independence Day together.
During the closing ceremony, the Ambassador congratulated the winners of the tournament, adding that the event also aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle among community members through sports, as well as strengthening the bond of friendship and fraternity among them.
The winners in men's doubles category were Doni and Latif Saifudin followed by Abang Sahlan and Saiful Uddin and Tono Gustana and Sigit who won second and third places, respectively.
In the amateur 'Red and White' category, the winners were Nuryulad and Budi Setiawan while Abdullah and Nabil Arrayanand Safiun and Boy Dharmawan bagged second and third places, respectively. All the winners received trophies, medals and presents provided by the Ambassador.
Sidehabi said that the tournament besides promoting the 18th Asian Games, which will be held in Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia from August 18 to September 2, 2018, reiterates Indonesian community's continuous support for FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Ambassador also expressed his gratitude to Qatar's government for its support for the Asian Games 2018 in Indonesia.
According to the head of organising committee, Muchamad Yusuf, the celebration will take place throughout the summer holidays and also include table tennis, bowling and several other traditional games.
He added that the tournament is part of sport diplomacy in Qatar as well as providing an opportunity for Indonesian community to promote the positive image of Indonesia in Qatar and to enhance the bilateral relations between the two countries.
