For a country eager to court foreign investment, Saudi Arabia is working hard to isolate itself. The kingdom's flag-carrier has suspended flights to Toronto, the latest escalation in an odd spat that started when Canada's foreign minister criticised the arrest of a Saudi activist. Saudi Arabia expelled the Canadian ambassador and froze economic ties (which were minimal).
Saudi media have tried to whip up a patriotic fervour, painting Canada as a dystopian hellscape filled with beggars and oppressed women.
Canadians have responded with bewilderment and mirth. Their prime minister, Justin Trudeau, says his government will continue to stand against human-rights abuses.
Tellingly, none of the kingdom's Arab allies have joined the dispute. From the blockade of Qatar to the ruinous war in Yemen, Saudi Arabia's foreign policy is increasingly rash. (The Economist)
