TWO students from Qatar University College of Pharmacy (QU-CPH) recently completed a care pharmacy rotation at Xavier University in New Orleans, the USA.
PharmD students Arwa Taher and Rana Saleh were engaged in a wide range of learning activities such as meeting clinical pharmacy specialists from diverse practice settings, learning about the health care system in Louisiana, and participating in interdisciplinary practice experiences.
They also had several opportunities to shadow the work of clinical pharmacists in a critical care setting in an academic teaching hospital. The students were supervised by Dr Sara al Dahir, Clinical Associate Professor/Fulbright Scholar-Division of Clinical and Administrative Sciences at Xavier University of Louisiana College of Pharmacy.
Commenting on the students’ rotation, CPH Dean Dr Mohammed Diab said: “CPH puts great emphasis on providing students with learning opportunities and experiences to enrich their education. Maintaining strong relationships with our international partners allows our students to gain professional experience and enhance their education. It also provides them with an opportunity to network with their peers and mentors in the global professional community.”
Dr Sara al Dahir said: “The continued success of the Xavier-Qatar exchange can be credited to the continuing support of the administrations of both universities, especially Dr Kathleen Kennedy and Dr Reynold Verret of Xavier. The enthusiasm and commitment to excellence displayed by the QU-CPH PharmD students remains the fuel of the exchange that strive both institutions to model excellence in patient care and for the students.”
CPH PharmD program Director Dr Bridget Javed said: “It is a great opportunity to send our students to Xavier University to broaden their practice experiences that eventually will be integrated into Qatar’s health care
system.”
Arwa Taher said: “I believe that travelling is the best form of education, and my clinical rotation in the USA was definitely an eye-opening experience. The understanding of health care practice and diverse cultures makes one realise how things vary in other parts of the world and where the common ground lies.”
Rana Saleh said: “I was blessed to have such a great opportunity in which I got to meet many people from different cultures and backgrounds. This was an amazing learning experience and I am looking forward for other experiences and successes in the future.”
