THE General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) is all set to connect over 5,000 livestock farms to power supply with the completion of the QR250 million power transmission networks (Commercial) developed for livestock farm complexes located at the remote and isolated areas.
Announcing the completion of power transmission network at a press conference in Doha on Sunday, Assistant Director of Customer Services at Kahramaa Abdullah Faraj Mubarak Nasrullah said the Corporation will begin connection to the farms in accordance with the standard procedures after the completion of receiving the applications, adding that the connection will be linked to the readiness of the site and shall be within a maximum period of three months.
Kahramaa will start receiving applications from farmers, from August 8, at the municipality where the farm concerned is located.
The expansion of power transmission network developed now under 'commercial' category will steadily reduce the initial investment required for the electricity connection to the farms.
According to Nasrullah, power supply offered by Kahramaa in the 'commercial' category will reduce the initial investment required for the power supply up to 90 per cent.
"Now, the farmers will get the power supply with an initial investment of QR4,410 instead of the earlier Kahramaa's fee of QR44,350 for the same under the 'entertainment' category," he said.
Director of Animal Wealth Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment Farhoud Hadi al Hajri said the project completed in record time of six months will benefit 5,000 livestock farms spread across Al Khrairb, Al Simaisma, Al Wakrah, Al Khor, Al Shehaniya and Abu Nakhlah.
Hajri stressed that the farm complexes have become an important factor in supporting strategic stocks to promote self-sufficiency and food security of Qatar.
He pointed out that the number of livestock in the country is close to 1.6 million heads, while the number of economic animals in farm complexes is about 350,000 heads, of which sheep constitute 66 percent.
With regard to the role of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, Hajri said that the ministry will play its monitoring role on the farms and will also encourage the breeding of livestock.
