TOTAL Research Center Qatar (TRC-Q) recently welcomed a cohort of 20 students from Texas A&M University's main campus in the United States and Texas A&M University at Qatar (Tamuq) in a technical visit to its facility, in order for the students to have a one-on-one engagement with researchers and to gain practical experience in research related activities.
The students took the opportunity to discover Total's state-of-the-art research facility and laboratories located in Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) and met with some of Total's key researchers who work on four main areas: organic geochemistry, acid stimulation of carbonate reservoirs, sustainable development and CO2 utilisation.
The students were delighted to learn more about the various research activities in which Total is engaged worldwide, and gain an insight of some of the main issues and challenges currently being tackled in Qatar.
TRC-Q and Tamuq enjoy a long-standing partnership and they are currently engaged in several joint research projects together on topics relevant for the region: CO2 conversion, enhanced oil recovery, multiphase flow and Nano-sensors for air quality.
"Total Research Center Qatar's activities in Qatar are line with Qatar National Vision 2030. Our research is often conducted in partnership with our scientific and industrial partners, including Texas A&M University at Qatar. Visits like this give us an opportunity to strengthen our ties to build strong bridges and interactions between the education sector and the energy industries,"said Yousef al Jaber, director of TRC-Q.
The visit comes as a part of the 'ELCIR program (Engineering Learning Community Introduction to Research), established by the College of Engineering at Tamuq. The programme's objective is to increase diversity in engineering and to better prepare the engineers who are joining today's global and dynamic workforce.
ELCIR engages freshman students from the very onset of their engineering careers in four rich sets of experiences, which include hands-on research class, high impact global experience, and engagement with first-class researchers and research centres.
Situated in QSTP in Doha, TRC-Q is a cornerstone in the Group's international network of seven research and development facilities. It opened its doors in 2009 to spearhead Total's R&D activities in the Middle East and has rapidly become a hub for applied research, development of expertise and knowledge sharing with Qatari partners.
