TWO teams from the Technical Secondary School for Boys won first and second places at the Annual Computing Contest 2018, which was recently held by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG).
The third place winner was a team from Doha Secondary School for Boys, while a team from Tariq Ibn Zeyad Secondary School for Boys won the fourth place and a team from Amna Bint Wahab Secondary School for Girls won the fifth place. Al-Resala Secondary School for Girls team won the Team Spirit Award.
The contest, sponsored by Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) and Dolphin Energy Limited, drew 30 teams of 60 Qatari students from 17 secondary schools. Students programmed a robot that performed tasks within a limited time. Since November 2017, they have attended workshops, and met with QU faculty who visited the schools and provided guidance on competition rules and guidelines.
In his remarks, CENG Dean Dr Khalifa al Khalifa said,"I would like to thank Qapco and Dolphin Energy Limited for supporting this competition, and the participating schools. This competition adds value to the efforts that CENG is making to motivate students to join engineering programmes at QU and bring their attention to the importance of STEM subjects to the community."
Dolphin Energy General Manager, Qatar Hassan al Emadi said:"We are very proud to work closely with Qatar University College of Engineering each year to support youth development and help attract students to computer science and engineering programmes. The computing contest is a significant platform through which we can mentor students to learn through diversified and unconventional approaches. It also complements our efforts to raise awareness on the importance of STEM and encourage a career in engineering. Congratulations to all involved."
CSE Head Sumaya al Maadeed said,"This competition is considered as one of the CSE main projects to develop the academic progress at CENG Department of Computer Science and Engineering by reaching secondary schools in order to get students aware of the engineering and scientific principles before they join the university. This competition is an opportunity to discover the students' capacities and to help them develop such skills to programme robots that can do several tasks at a specific time within a planned track."
