THE Industrial Area is getting a facelift of sorts these days with newly metalled roads, traffic signals and organised parking spaces.
In an effort to match the new infrastructure, commercial establishments are taking steps to beautify their premises. Some of the new roads and pedestrian paths are in the last phase of completion.
The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) had launched a massive cleaning campaign in the Industrial Area in 2016.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune, a manager of a garage said,"The Industrial Area is getting this makeover which was long overdue. Gone is the dusty and unorganised Industrial Area. Traffic signals at appropriate locations, specific parking areas and strict instructions by the authorities to maintain the Industrial Area will provide a modern look to the place."
Once construction ends, there will be no haphazard parking of heavy trucks and other vehicles which used to hamper smooth traffic flow and also resulted in a shortage of parking slots. The new roads which offer organised parking facilities and pedestrian paths on both sides will likely stop the practice of haphazard parking.
A supervisor at a garage said,"We have strict instructions to keep our premises clean. Parking vehicles in unauthorised spaces will lead to fines. We are also under instruction to follow safety measures in the workplace."
Manager of a cafeteria who has entirely replaced its furniture and given a face-lift to the interiors said,"The Ministry of Municipality and Environment has already given a specific design and colour for cafeterias in the area. Now, the construction of new roads is in the final phase. So, it is our turn to support the authorities in making the area attractive."
A driver said that the massive cleaning campaign triggered by the authorities has even helped reduce the pollution. The removal of hundreds of abandoned vehicles across Industrial Area has also helped.
During the cleaning campaign carried out in coordination with the ministry's various departments, a total of 5,013 abandoned vehicles, 10,820 tonnes of waste and 21,018 used tyres were removed from the Industrial Area. As many as 1,002 violations were also detected during the campaign.
