The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has registered 2,295 new companies, including 1,703 main commercial records and 592 branch commercial records in April, according to the MEC's Commerce Sector Business Progress Report.
Limited liability companies (LLCs) accounted for 63 percent of the new commercial records followed by LLCs in the category of single-person companies at 27 percent, while 9 percent of the new companies were registered in the category of individual corporations, the report said.
Contracting companies topped the list of most common activities in April at 356 commercial records followed by cleaning firms (164), service firms (112), and building material firms (126).
The report pointed out that out of the total 7,985 commercial licences issued in April, 1,623 were new, 1,065 were modified and 5,297 licences were renewed.
Meanwhile, a total of 313 companies closed in April, representing 13.6 percent of the newly registered companies. Contractors led the list with 50 percent, followed by building material firms (19 percent), electronic appliances and accessories (12 percent), public goods trading (11 percent), and restaurants, cafeterias and ice cream shops (8 percent).
Regarding write-off activities, the report showed contracting companies topping the list at 36 percent followed by trading in construction materials, electrical appliances and electronics at 18 percent, and public trading companies at 17 percent.
According to the report, the total number of transactions during January 2018 at the ministry's branches reached 33,116.
In the field of intellectual property rights (IPR), the report pointed that the number of new patent applications in April reached 44, while 179 applications were renewed.
On the other hand, 22 trademarks were registered in April, while 30 certificates were issued in the field of copyright and neighbouring rights.
