THE Human Rights Department, in collaboration with the Community Policing Department, on Wednesday, honoured heads of Arab and non-Arab communities as part of the celebration of World Workers' Day.
The event, held at the headquarters of the Human Rights Department in Madinah Khalifa, was attended by a large number of representatives of the communities in Qatar.
Speaking at the event, Lieutenant-Colonel Saad Salim al Dousari, assistant director of Human Rights Department, pointed out that Qatar's celebration of the day symbolises the national obligation to the role of workers in Qatar, in the renaissance of the country and its development, as well as the State's keenness to establish cultural coexistence, peace and social security in a multi-ethnic society.
He added that expatriate workers in Qatar enjoyed various forms of economic, social and health care as well as legal protection in terms of the constitution.
"The constitutional principles were personified through legal and institutional frameworks in the labour law regarding multiple aspects such as wages, hours of work, leave, termination, compensation for work injuries, among others," he said.
Colonel Ghanem Saad al Khiyarain, head of External Branches at Community Policing Department, said that the State is always keen to apply the highest standards of physical and moral protection for workers in accordance with international standards and to secure the working and living environment appropriate for workers.
On their parts, the community representatives praised the efforts of the State to ensure welfare of the expatriate workers and hailed their participation in the construction process and contribution to the development of Qatar.
The celebration represented an important milestone in the good relationship between expatriate workers and all State institutions, including the Ministry of the Interior.
