HAMAD Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) has announced six new academic degree programmes under its College of Islamic Studies (CIS) and College of Science and Engineering (CSE).
HBKU President Dr Ahmad M Hasnah, CIS Dean Dr Emad el Din Shahin and CSE Founding Dean Dr Mounir Hamdi officially announced new programmes during a press conference in Doha on Wednesday.
The Master's and doctoral programmes are designed to equip Qatari and resident students with skills and expertise to actively participate in Qatar's national development strategy and in response to the growing demand of the global community.
CIS's three new programmes, which will be offered from September 2018, include Master of Arts in Islam and Global Affairs, Master of Science in Islamic Art, Architecture and Urbanism and PhD in Islamic Finance and Economy.
CSE is opening unique offerings aiming at encouraging knowledge-sharing in areas that carry transformative potential for the management capabilities of analysts and specialists involved in healthcare sectors and supply chain networks.
The new programmes include a Master of Data Analytics in Health Management a Master of Science in Logistics and Supply Chain Management and a PhD in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
Dr Hasnah said all the programmes were based on feasibility and market studies involving a thorough investigation and assessment of the market needs and stakeholders engagement.
"HBKU CSE's and CIS' newest programmes embody the university's foundational pillars of innovation and excellence. All programmes at HBKU are designed to align with the strategic and developmental needs of Qatar, the region and beyond. Drawing on unprecedented curricula and the collective expertise of the university's world-class faculty, the programmes can often be classified as the first of their kind in the region and the world," he said.
"Through their multidisciplinary approach, the new programmes are means for supporting key industries in Qatar and the region. They also seek to address critical market challenges and visualise current and future market trends, with the aim of propelling Qatar's economy and producing graduates who show great promise."
CIS' Master of Arts in Islam and Global Affairs provides an opportunity to analyse the place of Islam in the context of global affairs and the interconnected challenges facing global Muslim communities from a trans-disciplinary perspective. The Master of Science in Islamic Art, Architecture and Urbanism, a multi-disciplinary programme in collaboration with the University of Oxford in UK, aims to equip future curators, historians and designers with critical and informed understanding of Islamic art and architecture.
The PhD in Islamic Finance and Economy aims to provide students with the required analytical and research skills to understand, analyse and interpret the working of the rapidly growing Islamic financial services and markets.
"History records Muslim scholars and educationalists as frontrunners of groundbreaking discoveries in arts, architecture, medicine, sciences, philosophy and literature. At CIS, we are committed to modernising Islamic higher education so that it may once again occupy a central position of relevance locally, regionally and internationally. We hope that our three newest degrees will contribute significantly to reviving that culture of academic innovation in the Muslim world, which will find its epicentre in Qatar," said Dr Shahin.
CSE's Master of Data Analytics in Health Management programme is the very first of its kind in the world and aims to train talented scientists and researchers to effectively contribute to designing and implementing data analytic tools in healthcare systems in both Qatar and abroad.
The Master of Science and PhD degrees in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, on the other hand, aim to equip graduates with the skill sets sought after by both the private and public sectors in logistics and supply chain management.
"As Qatar develops its medical facilities in what is today the region's biggest healthcare expansion project, the need for highly-trained data analytics specialists continues to grow manifold. Our Master's programme in data analytics in health management sector is a direct complement to Qatar's projected needs in qualified human resources. Similarly, logistics and supply chain management form the core of any country's commerce and trade industries, both those which operate within and outside their borders," Dr Hamdi said.
Applications are now open to all new programmes.
