Architecture in western Qatar has been one of the centres of cultural enlightenment for people of other Gulf countries thanks to its unique designs as well as decorations that distinguish them from the plant decorations in Western architecture, said Qatari visual artist Mohamed Ali Abdullah.
Abdullah made the remarks on Tuesday at a seminar held at the Ministry of Culture and Sports on the architectural identity of the Gulf region.
The seminar highlighted the uniqueness of Qatari architecture.
Abdullah stressed that Qatar is doing its best to protect such heritage and archaeological sites, foremost of which is Souq Waqif, old houses, Barzan tower, Souq Al Wakrah and other landmarks that reflect the State's keenness to support national identity.
He highlighted the importance of making the current generation and future generations aware of their heritage, stressing the important features of architecture in Qatar and the Gulf.
He also gave a presentation of several historic and heritage sites that he helped restore, adding that he has followed scientific methods in the restoration of historic houses and sites in order to preserve them against time.
He pointed out that the houses that were built in the '60s of the last century have been restored in the same architectural styles, depending on photographs that document that architecture.
