INDONESIAN women in Doha on Thursday celebrated 'Kartini Day'. Raden Ajeng Kartini, popularly known as Kartini, was an Indonesian actress who transformed lives of many Indonesian women by encouraging them to get educated.
The celebrations organised by the Indonesian Women Community Association in Qatar (Perwiq) at Sapphire Plaza Hotel featured colourful cultural performances.
One of the highlights of the event was the Angklung bamboo music show.
According to the Cultural Officer of Indonesian Embassy, Anwar Lukman Hakim, Perwiq is a socio-cultural organisation of the Indonesian community working under the aegis of the embassy and is headed by Prihandoko Saputro.
The event was also graced by the Indonesian Ambassador to Qatar Air Marshal (Retd) HE Muhammad Basri Sidehabi. In his speech, the envoy appreciated the role of Perwiq members in the promotion of their country's cultural heritage.
The celebration featured traditional dances, soothing music of bamboo and also a talk show.
Commenting on the event, Andi Una, the event chairwoman said,"This year's Kartini's Day celebration is very special. Besides entertaining the audience with colourful cultural performances, we also held a talk show to raise health awareness."
One of the participants Soraya Alyahya said that they enjoyed the event thoroughly. She added,"Besides commemorating Kartini Day, we are here to make our friendship stronger among Indonesians."
Well-known Indonesian doctor Dr Kernia Saputro educated the attendees on cancer during the talk show. The show was hosted by Indonesian presenter Noni Anwar.
