Under the patronage of the Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani opened the sixth anniversary ceremony of the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed) at Qatar National Convention Center on Wednesday.
The PM also gave away prizes to the winners of the competitions organised by Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) for all members of society with a view to spreading the concepts of rationalisation and its objectives.
In his speech, Minister of Energy and Industry HE Dr Mohammed bin Saleh al Sada said since its launch in 2012 till the end of 2017, Tarsheed helped save about 265 billion cubic feet of natural gas or about QR5 billion in terms of money.
The programme has also firmed up Qatar's commitment to address climate change by reducing the harmful emissions by 1.5 million tonnes annually, he added.
During the event, Kahramaa also announced the commencement of the second phase of Tarsheed (2018- 2022) and its road map to achieve the objectives set as per Qatar National Development Strategy (2018 22).
During this phase, Tarsheed will strive to reduce the per capita consumption of electricity and water by 8 percent and 15 percent respectively and cut the carbon emissions by 7 percent. Tarsheed will provide technical support to a number of projects in the state to produce 500 700 MW of power from renewable resources by 2022.
By the end of 2017, Tarsheed succeeded in reducing the per capita consumption of electricity and water in Qatar by 17 percent and 18 percent respectively.
It also succeeded in reduce carbon emissions by 10.2 million tones.
