The security agencies have busted a gang of seven Asians who were defrauding people with the promise of antique treasure of gold coins. They also duped many by selling them expensive smart phones at half the price.
Brig Jamal al Kaabi, Director of Criminal Investigation Department (CID), said the CID received information that some people defrauded a number of citizens and residents by this modus operandi.
They had claimed that they possessed a good quantity of gold which they wanted to sell at a cheap rate.
The gang had collected a large sum of money from their victims after misleading them that they have a treasure of gold and antique coins which they wanted to sell, he added.
The perpetrators targeted owners of cars in public places and convinced them that they have a treasure of gold coins worth over QR1 million which they found in one of the abandoned buildings.
They claimed that they cannot sell or use them legally and offered to sell them to the victims at cheaper prices.
He said investigations have revealed that the gang has seven members, all of them Asians. On the basis of that information, the arrests were made. All of them confessed to the crime.
Lt Col Majid Sharida al Rumaihi, head of the Capital Security Investigation Section, has urged citizens and residents not to deal with such gang and follow legal procedures while buying and selling gold through approved shops.
He advised not to buy devices except from known and reliable sources, and to inform the security authorities of such persons in order to ensure the safety of citizens and residents.
