THE first coordination meeting of the national security programme (Somoud) at the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy's (SC) security committee discussed a number of topics related to securing the FIFA 2022 World Cup and the ongoing preparations on that front, with the participation of 21 departments from the Ministry of Interior (MoI).
The meeting, organised by SC's security committee in cooperation with the MoI's Planning and Quality Department, comes within the ministry's keenness to ensure the best preparations for the 2022 World Cup and reaffirms the leading role of intelligence and security cooperation in enhancing the security efforts in the country.
Planning and Quality Department Director Brigadier Abdelrahman Majid al Sulaiti said the meeting is a continuation of the coordination meetings with the SC's security committee, with the aim of fully preparing for Qatar's hosting of the FIFA 2022 World Cup.
Sulaiti pointed out that these meetings reflect the MoI's strategy 2018-22, and that the ministry is working through all its security and service departments to secure a unique hosting of the showpiece. He noted that the meeting is one of eight scheduled to take place in the coming period in order to review the security plans of the FIFA 2022 World Cup.
SC security committee's Jassim Mohammed al Kaabi said the participants discussed the Somoud programme and its role in securing the 2022 mega tournament.
He explained the efforts being taken to complete the programme through the national system of risk management (40 percent of the programme), the national logistics support system (40 percent) and the actual operations system (20 percent). He said the committee wants the programme to be a permanent platform and a legacy after the 2022 World Cup.
Kaabi said that the committee has completed several matters entrusted to it recently, including the Somoud programme, which is based at the National Command Center. He noted that the programme is one of the national programmes that cover the entire state and aims to secure all state facilities during the World Cup.
Through the programme, he added, a comprehensive security study is being carried out for Qatar to develop a national security plan to link all state entities and engage the private sector so as to build a national response base for all challenges and threats, both internal and external.
"Somoud programme seeks to strengthen the responsiveness and ability in order to withstand any security risks facing the State and affecting the safety of citizens and residents, and measure the State's preparations for disasters during the World Cup and how to prevent and respond to them,"Kaabi said.
"The programme consists of an infrastructure, operations centres, an information bank and a transport operations group with headquarters at National Command Center," Kaabi said, adding that ensuring security is the main pillar for the success of any major sporting event.
