Minister of Economy and Commerce HE Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim bin Mohammed al Thani has reiterated Qatar's commitment to its economic and strategic partnership with the US.
In his opening speech at the Qatar-US Economic Forum in Miami on Wednesday, Sheikh Ahmed said the US is one of the largest and most important trading partners of Qatar and the trade volume between the two countries reached about $6 billion. The bilateral trade balance achieved a surplus of $4 billion for the US in 2017.
The forum was organised as part Qatar's economic tour of the US.
The minister affirmed that the economic movement will include economic forums and bilateral meetings, organising meetings between Qatari businessmen and their American counterparts and organising round tables on topics such as health, hotels, tourism and real estate.
He said the US is the first source of imports in 2017, with Qatar importing 16 percent of its total needs from it. The minister said about 650 American companies are operating in Qatar.
Qatar has also increased its investment in the US for many years, which created thousands of jobs throughout the US. The investments included partnerships with several US companies including ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips and Raytheon.
He also pointed out that there are about 15,000 US citizens in Qatar, of whom about 5,000 are in jobs that require high skills and skills within the private sector. page 17
