Mauritius Minister of Financial Services and Good Governance Dharmendar Sesungkur has urged Qatari businessmen to invest in various lucrative projects in Mauritius, especially in the financial sector which are currently being implemented.
A delegation led by Sesungkur is currently on a financial services promotion mission in Doha to increase visibility of the Mauritius International Financial Centre (IFC) in a key market like Qatar in the Middle East region.
The Economic Development Board of Mauritius (EDB) organised a business forum on the theme 'Mauritius: The International Financial Centre of Choice' in Doha to showcase Mauritius as one of the prime destinations for foreign investment in the world.
Speaking at the forum that included members of Mauritius delegation and Qatar Chamber officials, Sesungkur called upon Qatari investors to review the investment opportunities in his country and to discuss establishing mutual partnerships that benefit both sides.
Citing Mauritius as one of the ideal destinations for international investment, the minister said there was an immense scope for investment in the country's financial sector, which contributes more than 12 percent to the gross domestic product.
Mauritius has achieved significant economic development especially in the tourism sector, which now attracts more than 1.5 million tourists annually, as well as the banking sector which comprises more than 22 banks locally and internationally in addition to Islamic banks.
Terming his meeting with Qatari businessmen as valuable, the minister urged businessmen from both sides to explore the option of establishing partnerships.
"This will contribute to promoting trade exchange between the two countries and will be beneficial for the economies of both countries," he said.
The minister said Mauritius has taken quantum leaps to diversify its sources of income and augment its national economy.
"We have emerging sectors such as financial services, communications and information technology. We depend on the international expertise alongside our national cadres. There are several areas where the two countries can work together to achieve the goal of economic prosperity," he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Qatar Chamber Vice Chairman Mohamed bin Ahmed bin Tawar al Kuwari said a large number of Qatari businessmen are interested to know about available investment opportunities in Mauritius.
Mauritius was able to achieve prosperity in the finance and exchange sectors over a short period of time, he said, adding that Qatar and Mauritius may complement each other in the Islamic banking industry, especially since Qatar has considerable experience in this sector.
Kuwari said that Qatar Chamber would encourage Qatari investors to study the investment opportunities in Mauritius and discuss forging partnerships.
