QATAR Fund for Development (QFFD) has provided a $3 million humanitarian grant to support the water and sanitation sector in the Iraqi city of Mosul and surroundings, focusing on the rehabilitation of water distribution networks and supply stations.
The deal was signed by Misferbin Hamad al Shahwani, QFFD's executive director of development projects department, and Geert Cappelaere, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa.
Shahwani said the grant aims to enhance water quality in Mosul, improve water, sanitation and hygiene facilities at primary healthcare centres and primary schools, and develop a water safety plan for the Ninewa Governorate.
"The project also aims at providing children and their families with access to adequate and safe water services, and access to sanitation services in health and education facilities. In addition, it is designed to strengthen the role of the Water Directorate in Nineveh Governorate and build on its capacity to provide integrated water resources," said Shahwani.
Cappelaere said,"The generous contribution from the QFFD is critical for UNICEF's efforts to assist children in Iraq, allowing us to increase their access to clean water and improve water and sanitation facilities including in schools and communities affected by the violence in the country."
The project will be implemented in cooperation with UNICEF and Qatar Red Crescent Society to support the displaced civilians who are returning to Mosul. (QNA)
